Born in Tuber Canyon Death Valley - DeathValleyDazed - 2020-11-06 Steve Hall forwarded an email from the grand daughter of a woman who was actually born in Tuber Canyon Death Valley. She is looking for more details about the history. If those interested can provide enough detail in the form of history, images, and narrative I'd like to create a short video summarizing our findings to share with the public and with this grand daughter. This link is to Steve Hall's hike down Tuber Canyon which prompted the grand daughter to inquire of him: http://www.panamintcity.com/panamint/tubercanyon.html Let's use this thread to accumulate information. To start, here's the main part of the grand daughter's email inquiry. "I'm just starting to research family history. On my mother's marriage certificate, she has listed Death Valley as her birthplace, but the certificate also lists my grandmother's birthplace as Tuber Canyon, Calif. This is the first I've heard of this in my 73 years, and it's a big surprise! Your hike there is the only info on Tuber Canyon I've found so far. I am now requesting my grandmother's birth certificate from that county. If you can give me any leads, to old history books or maps I can check, to locate more info on Tuber Canyon, the mining or Indian history, I would sincerely appreciate it!" RE: Born in Tuber Canyon Death Valley - Kauri - 2020-11-06 Wow, fascinating! Hopefully folks more familiar with the Panamint Valley will have some info on this; and the Panamint Valley forum might be another place to post this, or for her to look/ask for info. RE: Born in Tuber Canyon Death Valley - GowerGulch42 - 2020-11-06 There's a far too detailed history of the mines in the book "Death Valley and the Amargosa: Land of Illusion" which you should be able to get from interlibrary loan. I just ordered a used copy of this book for nine bucks off Amazon. BTW Andrew and Kauri, you are so lucky to have discovered DEVA at young ages. I'm a day late and dollar short in this department! I'm a day late and dollar short in this department! My first trip to DV was when I was a year and a half. We've been back at least once a year since then, except for the past few years (sadly, I haven't been able to get to DV since January 2018, for multiple reasons). Andrew, I'm curious when your first trip to DV was? RE: Born in Tuber Canyon Death Valley - GowerGulch42 - 2020-11-07 I was brought to Death Valley when I was a baby, but the first trip I remember was in 2004. Been back every year since (except maybe this year) at least once, totaling about 25 or 26 times. Hey Kauri and GG42, some parents just love to spoil their kids rotten. I'm green with envy! |
