Wow.  Stayed with his vehicle for a whole week. Good for him.  Though considering the photo of how much snow there is, maybe it's not that surprising.

The info I read on the Inyo SAR Instagram page is that this person was one of multiple folks who tried to use back roads to "get around" the Highway 395 closures due to the major winter storm. I wonder why they think the smaller roads have any chance of being passable if the major highway isn't. There were I think 11 groups who went around road closed signs on Benton Crossing Road in the same storm and caused over 180 human hours of work by SAR and other folks to extract them, and some of their vehicles are still out there. Crazy. OK I'll get off my soap box now.

It appears to me that the car is in Little Cowhorn Valley, on the Big Pine-Death Valley road, just east of the Inyo Range crest and a few miles east of the road to Saline Valley.

From the articles, it seems that the man was a local to the area. Why he turned off of CA168 onto the Big Pine-DV road, I’m clueless. CA168 east has been closed, as well as CA266 in Fish Lake Valley for quite a while.

Good analysis of where that image of the car was taken! I was wondering where along the road he got to. Now that's extra puzzling if he was a local to the area.

Re-reading the second article, he was returning home to Gardnerville from his second home in Big Pine. I assume he is familiar with the region.

I've also heard reports that someone tried to get out of South Pass from the springs and had to have SAR come and chopper them out as well. I haven't seen a news article on it yet, but it was on the Saline Valley boards somewhere. Odd that there would be 2 chopper rescues in the Saline Valley neighborhood, but then things have been weird lately.
