Agree with you on the high cost of lodging. However, taking some time to stroll the grounds around The Inn At Death Valley and directly across the street south to where they've converted the old laundry facility into a reception area is quite lovely. Also the short hike/scramble up to that gazebo like structure overlooking the Inn below and the "valley of death" spreading out north to south set in front of the Panamint Range s is delightful.
