That art installation is uh...kinda weird
The Lemoigne memorial, now that is how you do it.
Hey Daymoth, you were reading my mind exactly while visiting these three locations. Those water sucking palms belong back where they were transplanted from. The Oasis and The Inn at Death Valley seem hell bent on propagating the myth that palm trees belong at every desert oasis. No thanks to Palm Springs, CA and Hollywood for this misfortune.
I believe that NPS has made serious efforts to remove the palms as invasive species from Navel Springs, Gnome Garden, Palm Spring, Triangle Spring but the palms remain at Saline Valley Hot Springs.
I suppose that the artistic and determined creator of updated The Lemoigne memorial wishes to remain anonymous? I just love the work because it's not perfectly symmetrical and resembles so many grave vintage grave markings in language as colorful as the soul buried beneath. I hope it will stand the test of time and the relentless beatings of the wind and sun. It may last longer than the current wooden cross?
Here's a closeup still of the marker for those who did not view the YouTube video. Now I'm curious about what the marker is composed of, rock, stone, or other composite? The lettering seems to be carved out and inlaid with some white material of unknown type. I hope it's not regular house paint but some super tough acrylic or high tech material that will last forever. It appears to be done free hand which I love for a style. I also wonder how long ago it was placed there, but has to be within the past two years because it was not there on my last visit. Will NPS leave it be?
