I don't think I've ever been in Death Valley -- the actually valley part, not up above in Wildrose Canyon or the Panamints -- when it was raining.
According to Google Earth, the Racetrack Playa is approximately 3,715'. The road to Death Valley flirts with 5,000 for a considerable distance.
