The building you identify as the Rhyolite mercantile building is actually the school house. Rhyolite Schoolhouse | Southwest Explorers
I explored the Gold Bar Mine / Homestake Mill complex in 2000. Doesn't look to have changed much. Parked below and hiked straight up. I've encountered numerous old mining districts that were open pitted in the 1980s with old adits and crosscuts exposed.
Your photo standing in Lake Manley and your account of it was fun. The water in the image looks like some sort of psychedelic scene sans color.
Love the Smoky Valley and the Toiyabe Range. Had friends in the original town of Round Mountain back in the 1970s and 1980s before the mine tailings became colossal and have largely buried the old town. Used to spend weekends with them when I lived in June Lake.
