Phantom Donkeys Crossing Highway 95
#1
The following comment just arrived on my DEVA YouTube channel in response to a video about a woman feeding a banana to a burro.

Death Valley Dazed Did you ever see the phantom donkeys cross the highway in a line? My husband was a truck driver and saw them on Hwy 95, and so did other drivers in a convoy he was in that day. He couldn't stop in time as they appeared when he was right almost on them, so he drove through them and looked in his rearview and they were still there crossing, and when he asked the drivers behind him if they saw them, one said he did, and had seen them more than once before as well. Then when they got to a cafe to stop and eat the worker said "Did you see them? I could tell by the look on your face." So what do you know about this sort of thing? I can't find any information online about this. I would think people would be talking about it online. - by MUD PEOPLE

This is a new myth-legend for me about DEVA. I'm assuming most of this phantom burro action is around Beatty, NV because Highway 95 goes through there. Next time through Beatty I'll chat up some locals to see if they are spreading these stories around.

Just for fun, I'll see if MUD PEOPLE can provide more details such as exact location, time of day and year, how many burro, what cafe, etc. In the mean time keep those night vision googles polished and ready for action your next trip out to the park!

Here's the video prompting this thread.

My immediate question is, are these real burros that the drivers are somehow luckily able to avoid, or are they a "mirage" or illusion of some sort?

I'm also reminded of the "stealth black cows" which are said to often graze in the San Rafael Swell area of Utah, and have frequently been discussed on canyoneering forums. They're virtually invisible in the dark until one is right on them; and unfortunately there have been some serious collisions with these cows, resulting in unfavorable circumstances for the cow involved.

I'm going to be at the San Rafael Swell first week in November and will keep am eye out for black cows, though I planned the trip for full moon so maybe they will be hiding. The illusion aspect reminds me of a classic country song
