I’m planning a trip to Death Valley in late February and early March. It will be my 10th visit to DV since 2007. All but one of those trips was in the summer. This time, I plan to explore the canyons and other low elevation areas that are pretty much off limits during the summer due to the heat.
I know where I want to go. Thanks to years of following this forum. I’m actually looking for a decent place to stay overnight that’s near the Las Vegas airport.
Here’s why. I’m driving from Connecticut to DV. It will be my 4th cross country road trip to DV so I know what I’m getting into. Just before DV, I’m picking up my wife who will be flying into Las Vegas late at night. We plan to overnight in Las Vegas before heading out to DV first thing in the morning.
I’m thinking there might be other folks reading this who use the airport in Las Vegas as a gateway to DV. And who overnight in Las Vegas like we are planning. I’m not looking for the cheapest room, just something clean and reasonably priced. We stayed overnight at casinos on Freemont St. in past trips to DV. It worked. But I’m thinking there must be something better.

You might just head on over to Pahrump, NV for the night and get an earlier start on DEVA the next morning? Lots of hotels in Pahrump, unless Art Bell returns with his alien friends and abducts you both?

When we need to spend one night in Vegas, we use the Tahiti Village, 7200 S Las Vegas Blvd. It's about as close to the airport and rental car facility as you can get. A night is about $200.

I like the idea of heading out right away to Pahrump or some place. You would avoid city traffic driving at night, and I'm not sure I'd want to leave a vehicle full of my stuff out in a lot near the airport - some areas around there are a bit sketchy, though I have no real experience with that. We sometimes stay at a Best Western over near Summerlin - not right on the highway but close enough to Charleston to get an easy exit west from the city.

Thank you, David. It looks like a nice place. Not just for an overnight but for the entire week that we will be in the area. I will look into it further. Your forum posts and the advice you gave me a few years ago helped me plan some awesome trips. I do appreciate it.

This is great advice. An easy exit from LV is what I'm looking for. Thank you.

The place we stay is "Best Western Plus" on Sahara at Durango. The hotel does a decent buffet breakfast (I mean, normal cheap hotel buffet, not the kind you get on the Strip) It is on the cheap side, but the place is in good shape, the rooms decent sized, and the neighborhood safe (friends live a few blocks away). If you want to stock up on groceries before heading further there's a good Smith's across the intersection on Durango.
