New Closures 2/25/23
#1
Well if this isn’t Deja Vu.

Power is out to all of Furnace Creek.

North Highway is closed again.

So are Daylight Pass, Emigrant, Dante’s, Greenwater.  I’m on the south end of Greenwater at 2400ft and the snow line is around 3000ft.

Ouch. Seems like it has been pretty wet, looking at the weather radar. I think that snow is lower than forecast but whatever. Hope it gets a chance to dry out in the next few days.

Didnt they just repave north road? Or was it just graded?

Just needed cleaning off (heavy gravel cover) and a few sections needed patching. So most likely just gravel covered in this one.

I hope some of this precipitation helps the low water level in Lake Meade. Meanwhile, I couldn't get from Vegas to Pahrump last night (Saturday Feb 25), due to snow or flooding on Blue Diamond (conflicting reports). Road was closed and all traffic turned around. Not an auspicious beginning; I think next year I will wait until late March to come out.

Perhaps snow at Mountain Springs Summit?  I've seen pretty nasty conditions and cars off the road up there.  Looks OK now, per Google maps ?

Winter weather is a crap shoot.   A couple years ago I was out in late March and it was so so hot, had to spend all the time up on the high ridges.

Just an update from your resident dirtbag on the ground here in DEVA:

NPS is not confident that North Hwy will open any time soon. Apparently they got 4" of rain in that last storm up in that area and the road is destroyed again. Even Scotty's Castle Rd got wiped out again. Access to Beatty is still possible as Mud Canyon is now open, but Beatty Cut-Off was wiped out.

Snow is blocking both passes into Saline Valley and I've heard reports that a car is stuck in South Pass, the occupant having been air lifted out. So that is going to be closed for quite a while.

I've been starting to think about alternate routes into Racetrack & Hidden Valley. The only real option is from Eureka, down DV Rd to Ubehebe and in. But going up 395 and getting over the pass on Big Pine Rd is definitely not happening for quite a long time.

Its mental that they just fixed those roads and then some rain just washes them off in a weekend! Crazy stuff.

There has been theorizing going on that the big rain last year might have loosened up a bunch of rubble so that now relatively moderate rain may cause inordinate amounts of destruction.

I was just reading that Mammoth Lake got over 500” of snow this year? So yeah, things are in an unusual state.

I know South Pass was closed by rock slides 3-4x before it just got snowed in again. Definitely has loosened up some stuff.
