We were fortunate enough to tour the castle just before the flood.  Thank you for the update.

Gotta respect those involved in this massive restoration project. Scotty's Castle may be better than ever after all of the work is complete?

2022 ?!

I took one of those flood-damage tours in December 2017.  I was underwhelmed.  It sure seemed like some temporary facilities could have been set up and the castle reopened sooner.  Certainly it could and should have been reopened before now.

My understanding (based on what was said during the tour) is that NPS, DVNHA, and maybe other entities seized on the flood closure as an opportunity to completely overhaul the place.  That, plus I presume plenty of bureaucracy is involved.

We can only hope their funding holds out, and they do actually finish and reopen the place.  Not to mention the road.

In October 2015, NPS said the place would be closed for "several months."  That has now escalated to seven years!

Thank goodness I visited and took the tours back in 2012.

I last toured the castle in 1991. The last time I was there was in late December 1996, when I stopped for gas just before closing time to have enough to make it back to Big Pine. My research notes indicate my surprise and joy at finding it still open at 6:47 PM, my irritation at the “high” price of gas ... $1.67 per gallon.

Ah, the good ole days when $1.67/gallon was considered high, and the world was a far simpler place.

Haven't been through since the gas pumps were taken out, and for whatever reason none of my trips have aligned where entering or exiting via Scott's Junction made sense.

That said, kudos to everyone involved for trying to get the road & Castle back into top form. Maybe I'll break the streak and swing back through once it's all reopened.

Wow! Seven years to repair the damage to a facility that only took nine years to build, and that was 90 years ago! My goodness, how far we've come!

Interesting report here.  Clicking the link downloads a 38 page USGS report.

My notes indicate at the same time gas was $1.39 in Big Pine, $1.29 in Ridgecrest.
