Chiffon Turquoise Plant Mystery - DeathValleyDazed - 2020-11-10
Help identify this plant located in a remote and difficult location at about 4,500 feet of elevation between The Red Cathedral and Pyramid Peak. I don't recall seeing this beauty anywhere else in DEVA. I learn a few plant names and then forget them in between trips to the park. October 28, 2020.
I've searched through several online flora guides and also BlackTurtle's web site without luck. I've also attempted to email BlackTurtle for his assistance and invited him to this forum.
This video is unlisted and not public on YouTube just in case this lovely plant is new or endangered.

I can't recall what it is but I know MojaveGeek knows, so hopefully he will see this thread.

I believe it's somewhat rare but not endangered.
Just found on my computer archives where I'd saved MojaveGeek's reply to my post on the old DVnet forum: it's a Bear Poppy, and it is endangered (I stand corrected).

Kauri, thanks for your follow through. I also heard back from BlackTurtle who confirms your ID and pointed me to the same exact link. Here's his reply:
"I've only seen it a couple times. I saw some nice ones several years ago while hiking to Corridor Canyon from the Ubehebe Mine."
Since The Bear Poppy appears to be endangered I'll leave the video as unlisted. I suppose that I should stop by NPS or the Visitor's Center and notify staff of the location and number of plants I discovered on my hike.
Hopefully we'll see BlackTurtle subscribe to our new forum here.

Yes, I posted yesterday (been offline a bit) claiming that was bear poppy. I always feel good when I find them - great catch!

Well, with three expert witnesses, you, Kauri and BlackTurtle testifying in the high desert supreme court the verdict of Bear Poppy is found in the affirmative. I'm also pleased to know that all three of you have seen this lovely plant in different locations around DEVA. I sure do hope to encounter more of them and hope to capture some in bloom.

Hey blackturtle, I believe that you may have forgotten your own documenting of the White Bear Poppy in the Hole In The Wall Wash near the Red Cathedral. I found this while cruising through your expansive web site just now.

Your location of the poppy is west and far below the ridge line where I discovered a small patch of the beauties.
This means that you have encountered the Bear Poppy at least twice in Death Valley, near the Hole in the Wall and in Corridor Canyon. It seems to be mostly seen in drainages and washes which makes my finding it atop a small flat spot high up on a ridge line more peculiar. I wonder why the bighorn sheep have not eaten them out of existence?

Interesting observation! The Bear Poppy that I saw was high up on one of the ridges south of Moonlight Bridge---definitely a long ways from a wash, and at a relatively high elevation as well.
