Weather Alert
#5
Though forecasted flood watches were in effect here in north-central Nevada, Hilary had three phases.

Phase 1 provided occasional evening sprinkles on the 20th, turning to light rain in the early morning hours. No standing water, no mud. By late morning clearing to partly cloudy. The 21st remained partly cloudy through dusk.

Phase 2 came about 9:45 PM when my wife and I were watching TV and lightning hit close to the house with a loud snap. Heavy rain began. The local (Reno) TV news came on at 10:00. Radar showed a long line of thunderstorms with lots of lightning from Mammoth and north, the forecaster said they would be moving through Winnemucca throughout the night. I was awakened to thunder and my small dog barking at it repeatedly until past 3:45 AM. The following morning (22nd) I came out to find clear skies and my vehicles standing in rim deep water and I had large puddles of standing water, some of which are still containing water today (24th). Erosion, some light debris flows and standing water were found throughout my travels that day.

Phase 3 came late morning the 22nd, when clouds built into thunderstorms. Heavy rains hit again, but not to the degree as the previous night. They continued for about three hours.

In the morning yesterday, the 23rd, it was chilly, 48 degrees, with a very heavy dew. Within a few hours the sky was filled with cumulonimbus and remained so until dusk, though nothing coalesced to the point precipitation fell.

Hilary was pretty meek by the time it came this far north, nothing like farther south.
