DVD: My very first hike ever in DV I was carrying my 3 1/2 year old daughter on my back. We didn't make it to the summit, or even the summit of the smaller side peak, but we did get up to the amazing views into the Saline. I think that view is what sold me on greater DV. I was just totally blown away by it. Still am 
I have no pix of my hike up the Lippingcott road. Well maybe an old print some place, I will look. This was back in the 90s before we all went digital. Yes I think there are some interesting options involving the ridge south from the peak, but potential cliffs at 4600 feet.
Had a couple of interesting experiences walking the width of the Racetrack playa. The first was my friend getting stung by a bee way out there. I had one of those Sawyer "Extractor" kits (they are no longer recommended for snake bite) - it was great for getting the bee stinger out. The other was strange optics. As I'd walk, the edge of the playa was flashing at me. I think it was related to after images of the stark light/dark line at the far end of the playa, coupled with the up/down motion of my head as I walked. I actually walked part of it with my eyes closed because it was discomforting
As for wild and random routes... I'm sure you've been on many more than I, you are fearless!
