The other was strange optics. As I'd walk, the edge of the playa was flashing at me. I think it was related to after images of the stark light/dark line at the far end of the playa, coupled with the up/down motion of my head as I walked. I actually walked part of it with my eyes closed because it was discomforting

A 3.5 year old for a backpack, now that's not only heavy but wiggly!

Strange optics on playa: I've never experienced that but I can sure understand how it could happen under just the right circumstances. I enjoyed spending a half day walking the entire perimeter of The Racetrack and I've been going around and around in circles ever since. BTW - there are some cool artifacts on the south side of the playa.
