Cottonwood Canyon Rd
#11
I’ll be curious to see how many designated sites there are and how far apart they are. If they’ve got them reasonably spaced out then I think this is definitely a good thing and will limit over crowding in those areas and hopefully better guarantee if you have a site you will have peace for the night. Honestly, Echo and Hole are ridiculously close to Furnace to be unregulated dispersed locations. I’ve been surprised it has lasted this long. Anyway, there are plenty of other spots not too horribly far away if you hate campgrounds.

Also, how recent is this? It certainly wasn’t in place back in May. I wonder with these roads closed by the flooding and the NPS already needing to regrade the routes if they are implementing this along with reopening the roads.

I have some old photos somewhere of my parents driving their classic Toyota truck up Cottonwood Canyon in the late '80s, eventually I will see if I can re-find the scans.

Thanks, Kauri! It was a great truck and in the family for a long time. Should have never let that one go, but life happens sometimes.

Same with giving up film photography. I miss all of the happy accidents with shots and spending time in the darkroom. Once I lost access to a color darkroom though it was pretty much all over for me.

Would love to see that photo from the 80s if you ever do track it down!

Well as I mentioned we saw signs to this effect all set up on the Cottonwood road in March, but facing the wrong way or covered, really to roll. I guess they pulled the pin on that. Yes, as Exile says, let's see how they space the sites. Echo was getting pretty crazy last time I drove it and that was a couple years ago.

LOL, I'd been following this since the October posts and forgot the original post for April already mentioned the signs!

Anyway, so this is of course like nearly everything in the park, already laid out in the planning documents which I finally went and looked at:

See section 2.5.5 on page 69 for the plans for Designated Roadside Camping Corridors under Alternative D (the selected alternative):

https://parkplanning.nps.gov/showFile.cf...fid=139732

With some minor changes for a phased roll out in the final selection document (page 2, item 5 and Camping section on page 3):

https://parkplanning.nps.gov/showFile.cf...fid=164206

For those that don't want to go document diving the salient facts are to expect 4-9 sites on Echo, 3-6 on Hole, 6-10 on Cottonwood, and 2-4 on Marble. Greenwater Rd is also going to become a DRCC eventually with 3-6 sites. So it sounds as if the sites might be well spread out.

Also they may require pack out all human waste for both backpacking and vehicle camping on Cottonwood/Marble during seasonal peak times if it becomes necessary.
