I must be the only one who has not a single clue where all these are!

Several miles again in another direction I found a decent sized pictograph panel.
I’ve never seen a pictograph of a person wearing what seem to be clothes.  But I love the splatter of spat/blown pigment.  Sort of ties you to the moment of creation, the humanity of it.

thus far this site has completely eluded me....where the heck is it!!!! (not expecting a reply....metaphorically speaking.  I'll find it someday, maybe)

It's my favorite "hidden in plain sight" site in the park Big Grin

I’m playing catch up as I’ve been hiking and doing truck maintenance etc etc instead of keeping up in here.

So the other day I went to check out what I think is Red Amphitheater canyon.  The label of RA on most maps makes zero sense: it a wide valley that’s neither red nor amphitheater-ish.  Somewhere along the line I saw a report of where it was ACTUALLY supposed to be.  I cannot remember the source for that right now.

It’s a really pretty hike in a pretty deep canyon that changes character a few times on the way up.

This supposedly the “real” Red Amphitheater.  Fits.

Some of the rock slabs coming off have amazing texture.  Not sure what created this… obviously some old seabed or shoreline.  This piece was about 10ft across.

I had to turn around at this point due to time constrictions.  But it looks like you could keep hiking up canyon and possible out the head at the top.  It looks on topo like there may be more narrows further up as well.

Thanks for the latest round of wonderful pix! Indeed, that is the place that I found (based on looking for red pixels on sat images) and proclaimed "This must be the real red Amp". Your pix bring back fond memories. I told this to Steve and I believe he put it up on his site after he visited, which was totally fine with me - no one is going to vandalize that stuff and it was a fund adventure to find them. And I may be wrong but probably DVD will chime in as having come down the length of that canyon at some point. You got a sunnier day than I did, which is nice. I find that the reds really come out more in better light. I tell people to save Redwall for a sunny day. And agree, the texture on those rocks is really amazing.

I have tried to figure if that stratum is exposed anywhere else in the area, but I have not found much. Probably either of us is happy disclosing that location to someone who posts here regularly; I doubt it will get a lot of traffic.

Maybe the person who named it also named Marble Bath …  Cool

Well that false marker is at least protecting something.  I couldn’t find anything in RA worth hiding.  Lol.  But who knows what’s higher up canyon.

Actually the placement of Marble Bath is simply a mistake. On the old forum, one of our members (forgive me for forgetting who - if you are here please raise your hand!) found some notation of correction, I think at the USGS office in Menlo Park. And I ran into what I suspect was the real "Marble Bath" in a canyon in the Last Chance range off the Steele Pass road - a rather infrequently visited place, but one that had a clear old two track showing that it was known enough that it might have had a name.

At the risk of stating the obvious, the marble bath is a water polished depression in the narrow canyon floor?  I've seen photos of that canyon.  Long approach for none 4x4ers.  I woudn't be able to make it in a day RT that is for sure.
