Just found on my computer archives where I'd saved MojaveGeek's reply to my post on the old DVnet forum: it's a Bear Poppy, and it is endangered (I stand corrected).

Kauri, thanks for your follow through. I also heard back from BlackTurtle who confirms your ID and pointed me to the same exact link. Here's his reply:
"I've only seen it a couple times. I saw some nice ones several years ago while hiking to Corridor Canyon from the Ubehebe Mine."
Since The Bear Poppy appears to be endangered I'll leave the video as unlisted. I suppose that I should stop by NPS or the Visitor's Center and notify staff of the location and number of plants I discovered on my hike.
Hopefully we'll see BlackTurtle subscribe to our new forum here.
