Conversation With Emmett C. Harder
#1
Thanks to Desert Fog who provided me with the means to contact Emmett Harder (author of These Canyons Are Full Of Ghosts) personally over the phone today.

Mr. Harder gave me permission to drop a summary of our conversation here at this forum and to add information from further contacts between us. I informed Mr. Harder that I had recently become aware of him as a person and of his books, now awaiting my Amazon order of his book to show up. Here's the summary.

1.  89 years of age currently, some hearing impairment but his aids allow him to hear well. Resides in San Bernardino, CA.

2.  Computer savvy and wants links to my channel and videos that have a chance of interest to him and he realizes my intent is "non-monetary" and he claims the same ideals.

3. Not aware of The King Midas Mine nor has he ever met those original miners, Michael Harris and his son Jim Harris. (I was really hoping there was a connection so disappointment there) He has met and got to know some of the original Death Valley characters and he says many of those stories are in his book. I look forward to reading the book and I have permission to call him back with questions, "I like to talk about this with people who share the same value of history." he replied.

4. He was familiar with Skidoo but not with Keene Wonder or Chloride but he says that his memory is not what it used to be.

5. A proud member of the Billy Holcomb chapter of the The Clampers and familiar with the Holcomb family of San Bernardino County, CA and the Big Bear area (Holcomb Valley) and of Yucaipa, CA where I grew up.

6. He looks forward to an email from me with a summary of our call and the links to historical videos about Death Valley.

I felt fortunate to connect with Mr. Harder on my first phone call attempt and did not want to wear out my welcome so the conversation was relatively brief but I look forward to more connections with this kindly gentleman in the near future. Thanks again to Desert Fog for his efforts behind the scene.

If I enjoy the book as much as my brief conversation with Mr. Harder I'm in for a treat!

Harder's book is very interesting, I read it a few years ago.

Note that a Holcomb (Bob) was mayor of San Bernardino for quite a few years. Including when I was a kid growing up next door in then-unincorporated Highland.
