We got to see it from La Pine. Spent a couple days up in the John Day Fossil Beds afterward, and I spent some time recreating some historic photographs:

Climbed up Toiyabe Dome the other day in central Nevada. Only 4.5 miles to the summit but it took nearly 4.5 hours to make it there. Steep, loose, and brushy. I got real lucky about 30 minutes into the climb when I planted a hand right in front of a rattlesnake's face. It was lucky because the snake was harmless. A mouse butt was sticking out of its mouth.

Early bird gets the worm my ass. Late dude gets passed over because the "bird" is stuffed.

Did you at least off the snake some hot sauce for his meal? An offering for future great travels?

Gorgeous photo and sounds like a brutally beautiful hike.

I felt kinda bad because as I stood there for a few seconds waiting for my heart rate to go down and figure out how to best continue forward, the snake regurgitated the mouse and backed away a bit.

I think I ruined its meal.  Would a snake reconsume something that's already dead and half covered in juices?  I'm not sure.

Wow, crosscountry from the east?  That's a lot of vertical!

It was about 5k, most of that in the first three miles.  Upwards is OK, but my knees definitely felt The Down.  I've got a hike planned for next week, nibbling at the edges of a certain national park.  That hike might end up pushing 7k vert.  We'll see Smile

Is that anywhere near Arc Dome? That was my first exposure to NV, on an overnight, with a strange crew who all met online in the old usenet days. (If you know what that means, we can sit down and share arthritis stories).

Good luck with the 7K. Beyond my pay grade these days I'm afraid Sad

Yes, Toiyabe dome is in the same mountain range as Arc Dome.  You get a good view of one from the other.  They're about 6 miles apart as the crow flies.

Did a late afternoon climb of Pupfish peak today and was rewarded with a most excellent sunset.  This is looking towards Devil's Hole.  The weather is cool enough this week for being in the area and I hope it stays that way!
