The Southern End of DV got a bit of rain early last week.  Frankly it dumped on the Ashford/Jubilee/Harry Wade area.  First time with full thunderbolts and lightning in Death Valley.  It wasn’t however very very frightening until the wind gusts topped 70mph and my truck started rocking violently.  Which was a good wake up call to get the yell out of the wash I was camped in, as the water had started rushing down the slopes.  😂

Harry Wade became a river.  Which would have been easily avoidable if they’d knocked out the drainages after the last grading instead of just making one huge trench.  🙄

This is after the worst of it had come through 




There were at least 2 low clearance cars that got were stranded out there after this.  Some of the cross cuts in the road were pushing two feet deep.  There was only a 4% chance of rain so I don’t blame them at all.

Brice & I got an opportunity to be on the first Ranger led hike of the year (there’s only a few hikes each winter) to go visit the place known as the place that rhymes with “Yarnyard”.  It has lots and lots of “yossilized yootprints”.  (Im trying to keep Google searches off this thread so please refrain from using its real name).  We were lucky enough to get a decent group of ppl that could handle the hike and a geology geek for a ranger.  So it was quite enjoyable. 







I have no clue what these are.  But you could fingerprint it if it had fingerprints.

Haha, nice job beating the web crawlers there. It's a good tour/hike for sure and we almost got shutdown because it was raining pretty decent on the entire approach. Thankfully it cleared up enough to get to check everything out.

I  thought they only had 4 dates in february and you had to register like inmediately as soon as they get released!

The dates are all bad for me but im still trying to see if i can snag a ticket for the last weekend and make it work somehow.

Thanks for posting the pix of the yootprints. I'm a bit confused about the "yarnyard" reference, I thought it was a canyon with a metallic name, maybe there are multiple places or my memory is getting "yossilized" as well! Don't know if I'll ever catch them in person, so appreciate the pix.

There's a spot somewhere on the Amargosa side that I recall seeing some cool pix from, decent cross valley hike to get to, I'll have to see if I can dig up any info on it for my March trip.

Though with the new rain... the odds of roads currently closed getting opened is probably small as there will certainly be maintenance needed after this and the next rain.

Looking at the map yesterday I was surprised that the Keane road is closed. Probably at a spot where the wash crosses the road at a low point. It's nice walking in there when the road is closed, though, so if it is still closed when I'm there, I'll go in. Road to Keane, then the old trail over to Johnny Cyty, then out the wash, nice loop, not very strenuous.. though could add in King Midas for more exercise.

I believe the site at the metallic canyon is known for having barn cats. Its the same place.

Imagine having so many animals about that you feel like you're on a farm...........

It appears they’re releasing tickets one date at a time.  At least there was only one date up when I looked.  If you click the date, it tells you when tickets become available.  Best to be ready when they do.  They get grabbed quick.
