Death Valley

Ah, for those of us who think DV is cold at the moment.. We just hit zero in Boston and still going down, way down, overnight. My son up in coastal main reports -16. The wind is howling as well.

Just like an old DEVA miner, I'm "digging" this thread. I had no idea portions of Owlshead Mountains had been so scoured by prospectors. Maybe rename those mountains "The Miner's Anthills?"

Beardilocks and Brice are our resident Death Valley Bad Boys. Labeling someone a "dirt bag" in Death Valley is the upmost compliment. Someone asked Mojave Geek, "Any regrets about your world travels?" He replied, "Regret? That word is not in my vocabulary." Netllama enters the chat.

And to DAW, your history morsels are seasoning to the already salty tales added to this thread.

BTW - You Death Valley Bad Boys might consider exploring the canyon of your namesake, Bad Canyon, keeping sentinel watch over Badwater. Michele Digonnet and Steve Hall ventured deep within and scrambled around the divergent scary dry fall but I chickened out, turned around and retreated four years ago.

I enjoyed that post, DVD, and your comment about me is correct But the Talc Hills are on the east side of the valley, across from the Owlsheads.

Well since Beardilocks believes The Talc Hills are "poorly named" maybe I should start a petition to have them renamed "The Bad Boys Bluffs" in honor of Beardilocks and Brice? LOL

Name places in Death Valley are really cool but I've been unable to ascertain how The Confidence Hills obtained their name?

Loving the puns here lately.  Lol.  My grandfather would be proud.

I’ll keep “Dirtbag” in mind gif my next discovery.  Or maybe that the proper name for my truck.  Lol.

I recently went back out to the Salt Creek area in search of the geoglyphs that eluded me the last time I was out there.  I also added a couple of other sites in the region to the list for this hike including an ancient quarry and some campsites.  All of that eluded me this time.  But I did finally track down the glyphs at least.  Or what’s left of them.  It turns out I walked right past it the last time I was out here due to its poor preservation.

This is one part, or at least an associated work.  I hadn’t clocked it for what it was the last time I was out here due to the description in the report I read estimating the pile of gravel in the middle at 4ft.  I struggle to see how it’s shrunk to this point without human assistance.  




Deciding that must be one of the features I was looking for helped me to navigate to the others.  Data!!

This associated ring has withstood the test of time better.


This is why I’m out here.  Some of these amazing things are being lost to time and/or human interference. They might not be here to teach or inspire or awe as soon as next season or next year.  It wasn’t underwhelming to find such a faint glyph, just a solid reminder that nothing stands the true test of time.

Well you are persistent How old is that book which has the sketched map? Whoever mapped it must have had a pretty good eye, unless things have been disturbed, but who would bother messing up an alignment in the middle of nowhere (OK at some point the road went not too far from there) Were the faces on that rock random, or had it been worked? Looks out of place out there.
